Wine can make just about any food even better. But some pairings can be trickier than others. For instance, do you know what wines work well with sushi?
Many people mistakenly believe that white wine is always the right choice with any food containing fish. However, this isn’t always the case. Sushi can add an extra wrinkle of confusion to the wine pairing process, because it can have strong and sometimes unusual flavor components that defy standard pairings.
However, this doesn’t mean that pairing with sushi has to be difficult or intimidating! Here, we’ll go through the Elicit Bar & Lounge sushi menu and offer tasting notes and wine pairing suggestions for all of our sushi dishes. It will help you get more comfortable with how to pair wine with sushi!

Pairing Wine With Sushi at Elicit Bar & Lounge
Our California Roll is a thing of great beauty. It’s made with crab, avocado, and cucumber.
Suggested Wine Pairing: Rosé all day! In spite of the sweet pink color, rosé typically has enough acidity and bite to create a perfect pairing for the creamy avocado and unctuous crab in our California Roll.
This unique and unforgettable roll is made with spicy tuna, tuna sashimi, pickled carrot, spicy ponzu, and micro cilantro.
Suggested Wine Pairing: A sparkling rosé is the perfect pick with the spicy and zesty flavors of the Dehesa Roll. It is able to “cut” through the spiciness of the tuna and ponzu, and complements the acidity of the pickled carrot and zing of the micro cilantro.
This North American classic features salmon, cream cheese, and cucumber.
Suggested Wine Pairing: Believe it or not, a red might be the perfect choice with this roll! A pinot noir, with its light-ish body and delicate tannins, could be the perfect pairing. The cream cheese works to balance out any lingering acidity in the wine, so you can simply enjoy the mingling of flavors.
This roll is aptly named: it tastes like a million bucks! It’s made with spicy salmon, seared salmon, cucumber, masago, ponzu, and scallion.
Suggested Wine Pairing: A full-flavored roll like this demands a full-bodied white wine. A rich, robust white like Chardonnay makes for an ideal pairing. The acidity of the wine works well with the slight oiliness of salmon, and can stand up to the powerful flavors of ponzu and scallion.
Consider your taste buds lucky! This roll is made with Big Eye tuna, salmon, Yellowtail, spicy tuna, avocado, spicy ponzu, cilantro, and togarashi.
Suggested Wine Pairing: All these savory and spicy flavors call for a little contrast, so your best bet is to keep it bubbly, slightly sweet, or both. A sweeter white wine helps turn down the volume on spice quite nicely; a bubbly pick, like prosecco or champagne, can stand up to the powerful flavors quite nicely as well.
You’ll feel like Wonder Woman (or another superhero of your choosing) when you nosh on this protein-packed roll! It’s made with tuna, salmon, hamachi, crab, shrimp, asparagus, and ponzu.
Suggested Wine Pairing: A buttery white is quite nice with the Protein Handroll. Our pick is a Chardonnay, which has a robust, fruit-filled yet full bodied flavor. It’s slightly acidic yet nearly creamy, which works well with the many sources of protein in this roll.
Talk about a rainbow connection! This roll is made with Big Eye Tuna, salmon, shrimp, Yellowtail, spicy crab, cucumber, and avocado.
Suggested Wine Pairing: A sparkling rosé is a great pairing with this roll. It works nicely with the spice of the crab, and acts as a very pleasing complement to the creamy avocado.
Rock Shrimp Roll
Let’s rock ‘n roll! This action packed roll is made with rock shrimp, dynamite sauce, scallion, and soy paper.
Suggested Wine Pairing: Prosecco might just be the perfect pick with this roll. Its bright citrus accents and a touch of sweetness pair nicely with the scallion and flavorful dynamite sauce. It also works well with the succulent flavor of rock shrimp!
Shrimp Tempura Roll
For tempura lovers, this is the perfect roll. It’s made with shrimp tempura, cucumber, aioli, and sesame seeds.
Suggested Wine Pairing: The crispy saltiness of tempura begs for a wine with a little acidity. Enter Albariño! This white wine is bursting with citrus flavors and an earthy undertone, which works wonders with the natural sweetness of shrimp and the rich flavor of the panko breading.
The hills are aliiiiive! This roll is made with Big Eye tuna, shrimp tempura, spicy crab, cream cheese, cucumber, dynamite sauce, and eel sauce.
Suggested Wine Pairing: There’s a lot going on in this roll, and a sparkling wine works well with every single aspect. Choose a bubbly from the Sparkling Wine section of our menu for the perfect pairing with the rich, creamy, crunchy, and umami flavors featured in this roll!
Spicy Tuna Roll
A classic! Our Spicy Tuna Roll features tuna, cucumber, chile sauce, and La-Yu (Japanese chili oil).
Suggested Wine Pairing: Sure, a sparkling wine always works well with spicy flavors. But another option? Rosé! The bright acidity of the blush-toned beverage works well with the powerful flavors in our Spicy Tuna Roll.
Staying away from fish? Our Veggie Roll features avocado, cucumber, asparagus, and pickled daikon.
Suggested Wine Pairing: Keep it crisp and clean. A sparkling wine or crisp white like Sauvignon Blanc makes for the perfect pairing with your clean-eating choice!
